Analysis and Optimization of Wet Grinding Processes

from Laboratory to Production Scale

Theory | Analysis and Optimization of Wet Grinding Processes – from Laboratory to Production Scale

User seminar with the goal to impart the theoretical background and the function of agitator bead mills. The effect of important operating parameters on the grinding process will be discussed and various procedures will be explained.

Practical tests on the LabStar laboratory mill as well as on a production size machine will be used to demonstrate the effects discussed. Afterwards we will address the topics of particle size characterization and stabilization of suspensions (dispersion of ultrafine particles into the nanometer range).

Seminar Content:

  • Introduction to the NETZSCH Business Unit Grinding & Dispersing
  • Characterization of Successful Comminution – Terms and Definition
  • Overview of Grinding-media-free Dispersion Systems – Mixing, Wetting and Dispersion
  • Overview of NETZSCH Grinding Systems, Agitator Bead Mills
  • Effect of various Process Parameters
  • Model of the Stress Energy and the Stress Rate
  • Effect of the Dwell Time Distribution
  • Selection of the Grinding System and the mode of operation
  • Grinding Media Selection and Scale-Up ∙ Calculation – from Laboratory to Production Scale
  • Tour of Assembly area
  • Summary and Discussion
  • Optional (can be arranged after consultation):
  • Limits of Wet Grinding, True Comminution and Gentle Dispersion

PRACTICAL TRAINING | Implementation of laboratory tests – planning, performance, analysis, documentation

After the user seminar, the theoretical knowledge acquired is now applied directly to our machines. In working groups with a maximum of 3 participants each, various tasks are carried out on different machines.

Here, the test materials undergo either true comminution or dispersion. During this workshop, advisors are available to provide support, but these are hands-on tasks for the participants.

Prerequisites
You need the theoretical basics from the user seminar. It makes no difference whether you are currently participating in the user seminar or have already attended a previous event.

Content

  • Set-up and preparation of the laboratory machine
  • Changing of the barrier fluid and measurement of the no-load curve
  • Filling of the machine with grinding media
  • Recording of a pump curve
  • Preparation of the product suspension
  • Processing of the sample material, including sampling and sample preparation
  • Characterization of the starting material on the Mastersizer 3000 and on the REM
  • Performance of the tests
  • Logging and evaluation of the test results
  • Discussion of the test results obtained by the individual working groups
