Specific Energy

Specific energy is the net energy supplied to the grinding chamber in relation to the amount of product ground. The specific energy input into a mill is therefore determined by the power consumption, the grinding time and the amount of product ground.

The power consumption of the machine is divided into a so-called idle or no-load power and a net power input. The no-load power is the power that a grinding system absorbs when a grinding system is operated completely empty, i.e. without grinding media and without product suspension. This power consumption is decisively caused by the resistance in the bearing or in the mechanical seal and does not contribute to the actual comminution. The no-load power must therefore be subtracted from the total power input in order to obtain the so-called net power input.
